Change Default Windows Installation Path

Evolution of MS Word

Word has come a long way since its inception, and we bring you its journey through the past 25 years

It is well-know fact that Microsoft Word is one of the most widely used and popular word processors. But do you know that the Word had a humble beginning? As Word celebrates its silver jubilee year, let's take a trip down memory lane to see how Microsoft Word evolved to what it is today.
 
1983

 

 
It was February 1, 1983, when development work began on the first word processor at Microsoft under the name Multi-tool Word. It was later renamed as Microsoft Word and released on October 25, 1983 for the IBM PC, which came bundled with MS-DOS operating system.
 
Obviously, this was based on the MS-DOS character system and was the first word processor for IBM PC to show not only typeface markups such as bold and italics on the screen, but also actual line breaks. This was not a true WYSIWYG system, as the displays with a resolution to show the actual typefaces did not exist with IBM PCs at the time.
 
It will be interesting to note that this version of Word did not have a spell-checker built in; rather you had to use a separate Spell application, also from Microsoft, to achieve the goal. It was first demonstrated to computer users by distributing its demo versions with the November 1983 issue of PC World. In fact, it was the first program to be distributed on a disk with a magazine and a trend-setter in that sense.
 
1985 - 1987
 
 

 
Word was released for Macintosh in 1985 and it was a port from the earlier DOS version, but with a few cosmetic changes to be used on the Mac screen which had a better resolution. It still did not really have a proper GUI, but used WYSIWYG features. It became popular and Microsoft released Word 3.0 for Macintosh in 1987 (there was no Word 2.0) with various enhancements including the first attempt at making a cross-platform compatible format (RTF or Rich Text Format specifications were followed in this case).
 
Since Word 3.0 was buggy and unstable, Microsoft quickly released Word 3.01 and mailed free copies of the same to all registered users of Word 3.0.

The GUI-based Microsoft Windows was already out and Microsoft released the GUI-based version of Word - Word for Windows 1.0 in 1989. Interestingly, the first GUI-based version of word was not this, but Word 3.0 for Macintosh.


1992
 

 
Microsoft had its office suite ready in 1992 and Word 2.0 was released as part of Microsoft Office 3.0. Word had become a major word processor in the market by then, but this was mainly due to the failure of the previously popular DOS-based word processor - WordPerfect to produce Windows-based versions of the same. Many of the features present in Word today, were already present in this version of Word.
 
1994
 

 
Along with the release of Microsoft Office 4.0 in 1994, Word 6.0 was released. It was named 6.0 rather than 3.0, as would have been logical, so that it should not be confused with Word 3.0 for Macintosh, which was released seven years ago. Another reason perhaps could be that Microsoft may have thought "Word 3.0" was jinxed. It was a buggy version of the word processor for Macintosh and had proved to be very expensive as they had to ship an updated version Word 3.01 for Macintosh for free to registered users.
 
1995
 

 
It had become a habit to release Word as part of the Office suite, rather than as a single product. So Word 95 was released with Office 95, which was released in 1995 for Windows 95. This was the first version of Word featuring not only the word processing application, but also tools for drawing, multilingual support, real-time spell check, etc.


1996
 

 
Just a year after Office 95 was released, Office 97 was released and it had Word 97 as part of the suite. While it was similar to the previous version in every way, it included for the first time a feature known as Office Assistant, which was "supposed to" assist the user in common tasks. In reality, it was nothing more than an irritant and was quickly slammed by users.
 
1999
 

 
It took three more years to release Word 2000, which was included in Office 2000. In this version, Office Genuine Advantage was introduced, which used an internet connection to download updates for legal copies of the software. Another important new feature was the clipboard, which allowed multiple objects to be held simultaneously.
 
2001
 

Office XP (named as such to coincide with the newly released Windows XP) was released in 2001 and along with it came Word 2002. While the Office Assistant was still present, it was (thankfully) switched off by default in this version of Word.


2003
 

 
The year 2003 saw the release of Office 2003, and the version of Word that came with it was named as Microsoft Office Word rather than Word 2003. This version of Word had the same set of features as the previous one, but had a cosmetic overhaul with the looks matching that of the Windows XP design.
 
2007
 

 
Word 2007 was released in 2007 along with Office 2007. This version of Word differed radically in looks from the previous versions, and went more with a Vista kind of theme. A major and easily noticeable feature was the Ribbon user interface design which was a bit confusing (at least at the start) to users of the previous versions since it was result-oriented rather than the traditionally command-oriented Menu system. Also new in this version is the new XML-based DOCX format, which is not compatible with previous versions. This version of Microsoft Word was made available as part of the downloadable trial version of Office 2007 prior to its release.

1.) Keep a check on your Speedometer

As per a study, driving aggressively wastes and lowers your fuel mileage by close to 30 percent on highways and by around 5 percent while driving in the city. Therefore do ensure that you are not speeding up and breaking down hard. 

Driving at a sensible speed is not only good from a fuel mileage perspective, but also from your wallets perspective. 

2.) Travel Light

Check the boot of your car for the extra heavy stuff loaded on your car. Remove all the unncessary stuff and travel light. Travelling light ensures that your engine doesn't have to do extra hard work. Lesser hard work means better fuel efficiency. Your car's boot is not a junk room after all.

3.) Avoid Idling the Vehicle for Long

Excessive Idling of the vehicle does no good to the fuel efficiency. When stuck in Traffic Jam or longer signals, switch off the ignition and relax. Idling the vehicle is hard on fuel, environment and your wallet.

4.) Use Cruise Control on Highways

If your vehicle has the setting for allowing Cruise Control, set it to on when driving on highways. Using cruise control on the highway helps you maintain a constant speed and, in most cases, will save fuel.

5.) Regularly check your Fuel Injector, Air Filter and Oils

Keep a regular check on your Fuel Injector, Air Filter and various Oils used in the car. Ensure that you change them regularly and use good quality components. You can improve your fuel mileage by 1-2 percent by using the manufacturer's recommended grade of motor oil. Similarly, replacing clogged filters can increase gas mileage up to ten percent. 

6.) Keep your Tires Inflated to a proper level

Keeping your tires properly inflated is one of the most important tip. You can improve your fuel mileage by around 3.3 percent by keeping your tires inflated to the proper pressure. Under-inflated tires can lower fuel mileage by 0.3 percent for every 1 psi drop in pressure of all four tires. Properly inflated tires are safer and last longer. Check out your car's manual in order to know the proper tire pressure for your car.

7.) Shift Gears at Optimal Speed Levels.

Cars are designed to start in the lowest gear possible because that's where they have the most power, but that power translates to an increase in fuel consumption. To improve your fuel economy, drive in the highest gear possible when you are cruising at a steady speed, such as on the highway. If your vehicle has an automatic transmission with a "sport" mode, it's most likely that this is a computer program designed to shift later (and therefore keep you in a lower gear longer). While this gives you greater performance, driving in "sport" mode will also decrease your fuel economy. 

8.) On Highways, AC is a better option than rolled down Windows

No doubt, running your car's Airconditioner causes more power to be drawn. However, when driving at a faster speed, you must roll your windows up because rolled down windows mean more drag on your vehicle. Thereby negating the power spent by the engine on moving your vehicle forward.

Processes, programs and applications that run on your system during startup

Ever wondered about what causes your PC to take so long to boot? What are the various programs that start alongwith Windows automatically? now Nirsoft has released another interesting application called WhatInStartup. 

WhatInStartup displays the list of all applications that are loaded automatically when Windows starts up. For each application, the following information is displayed: Startup Type (Registry/Startup Folder), Command-Line String, Product Name, File Version, Company Name, Location in the Registry or file system, and more. It allows you to easily disable or delete unwanted programs that runs in your Windows startup. You can use it on your currently running instance of Windows, as well as you can use it on external instance of Windows in another drive. WhatInStartup also supports a special "Permanent Disabling" feature - If a program that you previously disabled added itself again to the startup list of Windows, WhatInStartup will automatically detect the change and disable it again.

WhatInStartup doesn't require any installation process or additional dll files. How to Change File Association Types in Windows XP

With Windows, when you double-click ( by default, you can definitely always modify the click properties to enable file opening on single click) a file to open it, Windows XP examines the file name extension. If Windows XP recognizes the file name extension, it opens the file in the program that is associated with that file name extension. This is called as Files Associations. It is in short, an association between File extension and the application which opens those types of files. For example, when you double click on .doc extension files, if you have windows word installed, windows by default opens .doc files with Microsoft Word. This happens because of a file association set in the background. However, there always can be multiple programs which can handle a specific file extension and if you wish to change to a specific file extension from the current association, this post is what you need to read till the end.

In order to change the File extension and Application association, follow the steps mentioned below

1.) Double click on "My Computer" or open up Windows Explorer view. Open Windows Explorer by right-clicking the Start button, and then click Explore.

2.) From the menu, select Tools –> Folder Options.

3.) From the Folder Options menu, select the submenu titled File Types. This then opens up a list with all the current file association mappings.

4.) Lets assume we wish to change the file association type for file extension .zip which opens up in WinZip by default. From the list, select the file extension zip. This tell you that the current association of zip file extension is WinRAR. Now if you wish to change this to Winzip, Click the button named Change and select appropriate program from the list that comes. In this case, select WinZip. 

5.) Press Close. 

Next time you open a file extension .zip file ( or for that matter the file extension for which you just changed ) it will open with WinZip.

Set Your Google talk Status as Idle (Whenever you want)

Google Talk included within Gmail does have the option which lets you get invisible on Google Talk but when it comes to the stand alone desktop client for Google talk, you dont have much options. One of the best ways till now to avoid replying to unnecessary conversations initiated by friends and aquaintances is by setting your status as Busy; but that doesnt work always as expected. We have been hoping that Google Talk's desktop client also gets invisible status soon. However, till that happens, the other trick that you can enforce is by showing your status as idle. Idle status usually represents that you are away and therefore not able to reply. Gtalk usually sets your status as idle after a particular timeout but as soon as you are back, that Idle status of yours just goes off and the world knows the truth.

With gAlwaysIdle you can now add two new items to the context menu of Gtalk allowing you to change your status to be 'always idle' or 'never idle'. When your status is set to 'always idle', you'll appear idle to your Google Talk buddies, even if you're sitting at your computer typing e-mails and sending IMs.

நேற்று ஒரு கோப்பினை டோரண்ட்(torrent) உதவியுடன் இணையிறக்கம் (download) செய்தேன். அதன் கொள்ளளவு 11GB. அதை நான் DVD ல் பதிவதற்கு முயற்சித்தேன்.

ஆனால் டிவிடி வட்டின் (DVD Disk) கொள்ளளவோ 4.7 GB தான். அதில் வழக்கமாக அதிகபட்சமாக 4.37GB வரைதான் நான் எழுதுவேன்.

11GB அளவுள்ள பெரிய கோப்பு (large file) அதுவும் ஒரே கோப்பாக உள்ளதை எப்படி DVDல் ஏற்றுவது? இதற்காக ஏதேனும் துண்டாக்கும் (splitter) மென்பொருட்கள் உள்ளனவா என இணையத்தில் தேடினேன்.

GSPlit என்கிற மென்பொருள் கிடைத்தது. இதன் உதவியுடன் மிக எளிதாக 3 கூறுகளாக ஆக்கினேன். மூன்று கூறுகளையும் தனித்தனி டிவிடிகளில் எழுதி பாதுகாப்பாக வைத்துவிட்டேன். இது ஒரு இலவச மென்பொருள் (freeware).

பல்லூடகங்களான (Multi media) இசை, பாட்டு, காணொளி (video), படங்கள், மிகப்பெரிய அளவிலான கோப்புகள் போன்றவற்றை சுக்குச்சுக்காக துண்டுதுண்டாக ஆக்கி டிவிடிகளில் ஏற்றுவதற்கு அருமையான இலவச மென்பொருள் இது என்றால் மிகையில்லை.

இப்படித் துண்டாக்கிய கோப்புகளை CD, DVD, USB, Zip Disk மற்றும் mobile phone களில் ஏற்றிக்கொள்ளலாம்.கோப்புப் பகிர்வான் (file sharing sites) தளங்களில் ஏற்றிப் பகிர்ந்து கொள்ளலாம். நண்பர்களுக்கு அனுப்பலாம். தரவிறக்கம் (download) செய்ய கீழ்க்கண்ட சுட்டியைச் சொடுக்கவும்.

A small story which worth lot

மிகவும் பரபரப்பானதொரு காலைப் பொழுதில் கண்ணில்லாத சிறுவன் ஒருவன் நடைபாதையில் நடந்து வந்தான். தான் கொண்டு வந்த பலகையில், "எனக்குக் கண்கள் இல்லை. அதனால் எனக்கு உதவுங்கள்" என்று எழுதி நடைபாதையில் போய் வரும் அனைவரும் பார்க்கும் வகையில் வைத்தான். அவன் மேல் பரிதாபம் கொண்ட சிலர் அவன் முன்னிருந்த விரிப்பில் சில்லறைகள் இட்டனர்.

அப்போது அவ்வழியே சென்ற மனிதன் தன்னிடமிருந்த பணத்தை விரிப்பிலிட்டான். அச்சிறுவன் வைத்திருந்த பலகையின் மறுபுறம் வேறு சில வார்த்தைகள் எழுதி அனைவரும் பார்க்கும் விதமாக வைத்தான். பிறகு அந்த வழியே சென்றுவிட்டான்.

குழந்தைகளுக்கு துணிமணிகள் வாங்கும்போது அவர்களையும் கூட்டிச் சென்று வாங்குவதுதான் உத்தமம். இந்தக் கால குழந்தைகள் முன்பு போல இல்லை. தங்களுக்கு பிடிக்கவில்லை என்றால் போடவே மாட்டார்கள். எதற்கு அநாவசிய செலவு?

15. வீட்டு வாடகையில் வருவாய்!
தற்போது போக்கு வரத்து வசதிகள் எவ்வளவோ மேம்படுத்தப்பட்டிருக் கின்றன. அதை வைத்து வீட்டு வாடகையைக் குறைக்கலாமே! சென்னையைப் பொறுத்தவரை, மின்சார ரயில்கள் நகரின் கடைசி வரை இணைக்கின்றன. நகரின் மத்தியில், ரயில் நிலையத் திலிருந்து தள்ளி குடியிருக்கிறீர்கள் என்றால், நகரின் கடைசிக்கு.. ஆனால், ரயில் நிலையத்துக்கு அருகில் வீட்டை மாற்றிக் கொள்வது நல்லது. நகரின் கடைசியில் இருந்தாலும், அந்த வீடு ரயில் நிலையத் திற்கு அருகிலேயே இருப்பதால், போக்கு வரத்து செலவு, பயண நேரம் இரண்டிலும் ஒரே செலவாகத்தான் இருக்கும். ஆனால், அங்கு நீங்கள் செலுத்தும் வீட்டு வாடகை குறைவாக இருக்கும். அது எவ்வளவு சேமிப்பை தருமே!
16. கையில் கூடுதலாக பணம் இருக்கிறதா? கடன்களை திருப்பிச் செலுத்துங்கள்!
கையில் அதிகப்படியான பணம் இருக்குமானால் வாங்கிய கடன்களை அடைப்பது நல்லது. கடன்கள் குறைந்தால் மனதில் சுமை குறையும். பணத்தை கையில் வைத்துக் கொள்வது மட்டுமல்ல.. கடனை அதிக வட்டியில் வைத்துக் கொள்வதும் ஆபத்துதானே!
17. விருந்துகள்.. வீட்டில் நடக்கட்டுமே!
‘நண்பர்களுக்கு விருந்து கொடுக்கிறேன்’ என்பது ஒரு பெரிய செலவுதான். பிறந்த நாள், கல்யாண நாள் என்று. ஏன் இவற்றையெல்லாம் வீட்டிலேயே கொண்டாடி மகிழக் கூடாது. வருபவர்களுக்கு ஏன் வீட்டிலேயே சமைத்து பரிமாறக் கூடாது. செலவும் குறைவு. வருபவர்கள் வயிறும் குளிர்ந்து உங்கள் சமையல் திறமையையும் பாராட்டுவார்களே! அதோடு, அலுவலகத்துக்கு செல்லும்போது கையில் ‘லன்ச்’ கொண்டு செல்லுங்கள். ‘வெளியில் சாப்பிட்டுக்கறேன்’ என்று போனால், அது பெரிய அளவில் செலவை இழுத்துவிடும் ஆபத்து இருக்கிறது.

கணிணியின் ஆழ்துயில் - Hibernate

இப்போது வந்துள்ள புதுவகையான SSD (Solid State Drive) ஹார்டு டிரைவுகள் கணிணியின் வேகத்தை வெகுவாக கூட்டியுள்ளதாம். கணிணியின் பூட்டிங்கிலிருந்து மற்ற எல்லா வேலைகளும் வெகு விரைவாக இருப்பதால் ஒருமுறை SSD உள்ள கணிணியில் வேலை செய்த பின் சாதாரண சுழல்தட்டுள்ள ஹார்டிரைவில் வேலை செய்வது மிக கடினமாக உள்ளதாக சொல்கின்றார்கள். இப்போது நெட்புக்குகளில் சராமாரியாக வரும் இவை விரைவில் கார்பரேட் செர்வர்களையும் நோக்கி பயணிக்கும் போலிருக்கின்றது. இந்த NAND சில்லு SSD -டிரைவுகள் சீக்கிரத்தில் இன்றைய கிளாசிக் ஹார்ட்டிஸ்குகளை பலி கொண்டாலும் ஆச்சரியப்படுவதற்கில்லை.

என் கணிணி வேகமாக பூட்டாகிவர நான் பயன்படுத்தும் பழங்கால டெக்னிக் ஹைபர்னேசன்.(Hibernation). வெண்பனி பொழிந்து எங்கும் குளிர் நிறைந்து கிடக்கும் இக்குளிர்காலத்தில் மனிதர் நாம் Fireplace-யை நாடுகிறோம்.அப்பாவி மிருகங்கள் என்ன செய்யுமாம்.


குளிர்காலம் வந்ததும் அவை தம் குகைகளிலே ஆழ்நிலை தூக்கத்திற்கு போய்விடும் என்கின்றார்கள்.அவை மேல் பரந்திருக்கும் ரோமங்கள் சிறிது உஷ்ணம் கொடுக்கும் அதேவேளையில் உடலில் அவை அது நாளும் சேமித்து வைத்திருந்த கொழுப்பு அவை உயிர்காக்கும். கதிரவன் எட்டிப்பார்க்கும் வசந்தகாலம் வந்ததும் இத்துயிலிருந்து எழும்பி மீண்டும் இரை தேட ஓடத் தொடங்கும். இந்த இயக்கம் தான் ஹைபர்னேசன்.

கணிணியிலும் இந்த ஹைபர்னேசனை Biomimicry செய்துவிட்டார்கள். எப்படி?

நான் விண்டோசை வேகமாக கொண்டுவருவதற்காக கணிணியை Shutdown செய்யாமல் Hibernate செய்வதுண்டு. நாம் hibernate செய்யும் போது அப்போது திறக்கப்பட்டிருக்கும் நம் பயன்பாடுகள், ஓடிக்கொண்டிருக்கும் நம் மென்பொருள்கள் எல்லாம் மூடப்படாமல் அப்படியே உறைந்து நம் கணிணியில் ஒரு கோப்பில் சேமிக்கப்படும். அதனால் மீண்டும் உங்கள் கணிணியை நீங்கள் தொடக்கும் போது மிக வேகமாக திறந்து ஏற்கனவே முன்பு நீங்கள் திறந்துவைத்திருந்த உங்கள் பயன்பாடுகளையும், ஓடிக்கொண்டிருந்த மென்பொருள்களையும் மீண்டும் கொண்டு வந்து தொடரும்.Shutdown செய்யாமல் ஹைபர்னேட் செய்யும் போது அப்போது உங்கள் கணிணியின் நினைவகத்தில் ஓடிக்கொண்டிருந்த எல்லா சமாச்சாரமும் hiberfil.sys எனும் கோப்பில் உறைந்து சேமிக்கப்படுவதால் இது சாத்தியமாகின்றது. உபுண்டுவில் இதை .hibernate.img என்பார்களாம்.

Real basic - உண்மை பேசிக்

மைக்ரோசாப்டின் விண்டோஸ், ஆப்பிளின் மேகிண்டாஷ், இலவச லினக்ஸ் என முப்பெரும் கணிணிநடை பாதைகள் இருந்தாலும் சீக்கிரமே ஒன்று மட்டுமே நிலைத்திருக்கும் காலம் வந்துவிடும் போலிருக்கின்றது. குறைந்த விலையில் ($199) வெளியாகும் நெட்புக்குகள், அதிவேக இணைய இணைப்புகள், அதனால் ராக்கெட் வேகத்தில் வளர்ந்து வரும் மேக கம்ப்யூட்டிங் (Cloud computing) முறைமை மைக்ரோசாப்டின் வயிற்றில் புளியை கரைத்துள்ளது. கூகிள் கொண்டு வரவிருக்கும்(?) ஜிடிரைவ் இன்னொரு கண்டம். அது வந்துவிட்டால் External ஹார்ட் டிரைவுகள், CD, DVD மற்றும் USB Flash டிரைவுகளின் மார்க்கெட் படுத்து விடலாம். எல்லா கோப்புகளையுமே நாம் இணைய ஜிடிரைவ் மையத்தில் சேமித்து வைத்துக் கொள்ளலாமே.பிறகு எங்கிருந்து வேண்டுமானாலும் அவற்றை எடுத்துக் கொள்ளலாமே.
